Widely used for centuries, damask fabrics are something you’ve probably seen all over the design industry. Detailed, durable, and luxurious, this unique fabric has been used for home décor around the world–including across our collections at Eastern Accents. But what is this interesting fabric, and what can you do with it? Here, we’re breaking down this textile's origins, its special construction, and how to style these luxurious looks.
What is Damask?
Though popular in the modern interior design world, this textile has been used for centuries. Originally, it was a rich silk fabric made in China, believed to have originated around 300 BC. Overtime, this fabric was brought to Europe and traded through Damascus, which is where it got its name. Today, damask is typically a glossy, jacquard-woven fabric, usually made from cotton, linen, rayon, silk, or blends of these materials.
What makes it special?
Traditionally, damask is known for its signature botanical patterns, rich colorways, and luxurious sheen. Typically, this fabric is woven with a single warp color and one or two weft colors. The warp provides a solid and consistent base, consisting of vertically running threads; the weft threads run horizontally and help to create a colorful pattern. See our Arthur collection, for example - here, the multiple lustrous colors create its intricate and abstract design.
Another defining feature is this fabric's glossy sheen. You’ll often see a smooth warp satin in the background, with a low lustre reverse satin forming the design’s motif.
Timeless Appeal
This special textile has endured the test of time and is still a lovable and versatile look. Not only is it popular as bedding, but also throughout the home. While single damask is made with a five-harness satin weave, its original double (or true) form is woven with an eight harness satin weave, for a firmer hand. This durable nature makes it a perfect option for upholstery and drapery projects. Try this textile on a unique bench or ottoman, like our Lourde Celadon Round Ottoman, for a regal statement piece.
Experiment by using this lustrous fabric as a tapestry, adding both dimension and texture to a wall space. It’s even popular in fashion, with its eye-catching sheen and detailed, refined pattern. No matter where this luxurious look is used, there’s no doubt about its elegant and sophisticated charm.
