At Eastern Accents, we know the importance of a good night’s sleep. Down is an essential part of our bedding basics and sleep products, offering a comfortable and cozy staple. Here we’re breaking down everything you need to know about down, fill power, and choosing the right products to build your bedding around!
What is down?
Down is the fluffy undercoating beneath the breast feathers of geese and ducks. These are fine, delicate, individual fibers that radiate from a central core to form round, three-dimensional clusters.
As opposed to plume feathers used in our decorative inserts, down does not have a quill.
You’ll find down used in our sleep products, such as down comforters and down pillows. Down is the finest lightweight insulator and is also extremely resilient. Down gets its luxuriousness from the structure of its clusters, making it simultaneously strong, warm, and soft.
It makes for lofty and durable bedding for continuous nightly use.
What is fill power?
This term always pops up when it comes to down, but what exactly does that mean?
Fill power is the number of cubic inches one ounce of down will occupy. Higher ratings come from larger clusters of down. The higher the fill power, the larger the cluster at no additional weight.
Fill power is tested by lowering a weight on top of the down in a cylinder for an extended period of time. Once the weight is removed, the down’s ability to loft or bounce back is measured. High-quality clusters are said to have better "loft": they take up more space at rest, while compressing easily to a smaller size, without any crunch.
In other words, high fill power down is the fluffiest! But this doesn’t mean it feels bulky. High rated pillows and comforters are remarkably light and luxurious. This means that it can retain warmth better, while also being physically lighter.
