While lounging in a King sized bed can feel like the height of luxury, decorating one can be daunting. How many pillows does a King bed need? What is the right size for a duvet? What kind of sheets are best?

We at Eastern Accents have been designing and crafting home decor for over 35 years, and are experts in all things bedding. Our besets make it easy to purchase everything you need in one go, but here we will break down how to build your very own designer-level King bed-scape.

1. Bedding Base Layers

Sheets

The foundation of any bedding look is the sheeting. This is the layer that you actually sleep on, and it is essential for a good night’s rest. When looking for sheets, recommend all-natural materials, such as Egyptian cotton. This extra-strong, versatile material can be woven in many ways to different effects. Percale weaves are cool and crisp, the classic “hotel” feel. Sateen is silky, smooth, and wrinkle resistant. To learn what material is best for you, check out this helpful blog article!

Eastern Accents sheets are available in plenty of style options— from solid colors, to classic neutrals, to decorative trims and patterns.

King sheet sets include the following:

  • One flat sheet (115"x115")

  • One fitted sheet (78"x80"x17")

  • Two King cases (21"x37")

Some quick notes on sizing…

King pillowcases are wider than standard size, measuring 37 inches across. Two of these pillows will perfectly span a king sized bed. Before you order King cases, make sure you have the correct size sleep pillows to fill them.

Do you have a pillowtop mattress? A featherbed or memory foam topper? Extra tall mattresses may require custom fitted sheets. Luckily, we make this as easy as possible! If your mattress is taller than 17 inches, simply select a custom gusset (mattress height) when ordering online or reach out to our customer service department for personalized assistance.

Coverlets

A coverlet is an optional bedding layer that sits over the sheets and under a duvet. This thin, lightweight bed covering is similar to a large blanket. Unlike a duvet, it is a single piece without an insert. A coverlet is ideal for layering in colder climates, a single sleeping layer to beat the heat in warmer months, or just for extra pizazz. If you like to fold your duvet cover at the foot of your bed, as pictured below, a coverlet is the perfect, simple layer for hiding the sheets.

Duvet Covers and Comforters

A duvet cover or comforter will be the main bedding layer on your King bed. A duvet is made up of two parts—a cover and an insert—while a comforter is all one piece. The cover is also the beautiful part of a duvet, typically made from decorative fabric and often adorned with trims or cording. Eastern Accents King duvet covers come in a wide range of colors and styles, making it easy to change the look and feel of your bedding. A duvet insert is essentially a large comforter, filled with down feathers or faux-down microfiber, that lives inside of a duvet cover. This is what makes a duvet warm and fluffy. King size duvet inserts are available in a variety of fillings and warmth levels. Without an insert, a duvet cover is an empty shell.

Eastern Accents comforters are made with the same decorative outer fabric and embellishments as our duvet covers, but with 1-inch thick polyester batting sewn inside. Because of this, comforters create a flatter and more uniform look on the bed compared to a duvet. Many people find a comforter to be more convenient than a duvet, as it does not need to be taken apart for cleaning. For more information on duvet covers and comforters, read on here!

Eastern Accents offers two sizing options for King duvet covers and comforters. A standard King size is 102"x90", which drops about 12” down off the side of a King bed. For taller mattresses, our Super King size is 114"x98", which drops roughly 18” inches. If you want your bedding to cover your box spring, this is the size for you! We always recommend measuring the height of your mattress before ordering, as every mattress is different. If in between sizes, we recommend rounding up.

2. Plenty of Pillows

Euro Shams

Typically the largest shams in a bedset are Euro shams, the backdrop to all your other pillows. Euro shams stand up against the headboard, support the front pillows, and are great for leaning back and lounging.

A standard Euro sham size is 27”x27”—three fit across a King bed and create a refined, layered look. A recent addition to our line, Dutch Euro shams are 27”x37”. These pillows are the height of a regular Euro Sham and the width of a King Sham. Two Dutch Euro Shams will perfectly span a King size bed for a more streamlined and finished style.

King Shams

The next layer of pillows on a King bed are King shams, which are the same size as King pillowcases at 21”x37”. Unlike pillowcases, these shams are decorative and designed to support the overall bedding aesthetic. Two king shams at 37” wide will span a 76” wide King mattress nicely.

Decorative Pillows

Now it's time for decorative pillows! Many bedsets include only one rectangular accent pillow, but you may need two or even three to fully fill the space of a King bed. As shown with our Lorenzo collection below, two 15”x26” decorative pillows are nicely framed by the King shams behind them. For a more maximalist look, our Claire bedding is shown with two 13”x22” pillows, and one 9”x24” round bolster. Since each of these cushions is on the smaller side, the three of them together doesn’t overpower, and they layers add even more depth and interest tot the bed. If you’re looking to keep decorative pillows to a minimum, Eastern Accents makes many extra-long dec pillows at 13”36”. Just one of these makes for a quick and easy bedding finish.

The key to adding decorative pillows is making sure that the pillows behind are still visible. You don’t want to miss out on all that wonderful texture, color, and pattern!

 3. Additional Accents

Now that the main bedding is in place, it’s time to accessorize! A King size bed scarf instantly dresses up a solid duvet and ties in some favorite fabrics from the pillows. A throw blanket can also enhance your style. A flannel throw like Brera adds a cozy and casual touch, while a faux-fur takes the drama to the next level. If you still feel like you’re missing something, we designed our “Grande” size upholstered benches to fit at the foot of a King bed. Our Althea collection is shown below with our Humboldt Bench upholstered in Fleck Mineral, simple but with a big impact!

Now that you know how to design your own luxury King size bedding ensemble, you’re only trouble will be getting up from bed each morning!

FAQs

What inserts are recommended for my duvet cover?

We recommend our deluxe warmth comforters for colder climates and duvet covers made of heavier fabrics. Our medium weight is suitable as an all-season comforter, while our light weight is ideal for warmer climates or those who prefer a blanket-like feeling. For more information, please refer to our Down Buyer's Guide.

Please note that our duvet covers do not come filled. If you wish to order a fill for your duvet cover, it must be ordered a la carte.

What exactly is a duvet?

A duvet is a bed-covering made up of two parts: a duvet cover and duvet insert. A duvet cover is a removable decorative covering, similar to a large pillowcase. It is designed to protect a duvet insert from dust and stains, with a zipper or button opening to take the insert in and out. Eastern Accents duvet covers come in a wide range of colors and styles, making it easy to change the look and feel of your bedding.

A duvet insert is essentially a large comforter, filled with down feathers or faux-down microfiber, that sits inside of a duvet cover. This is the warm and fluffy part of a duvet. Duvet inserts are available in a variety of fillings and warmth levels. For more information, please refer to our Down Buyer's Guide.

Both Eastern Accents duvet inserts and duvet covers come with ties at the corners so they can be securely tied together. This prevents the insert from shifting or bunching inside of the duvet cover.

What is the difference between a duvet and a comforter?

A duvet is made up of two parts, the insert and the cover, while a comforter is all one piece. Eastern Accents comforters are made with the same decorative outer fabric and embellishments as our duvet covers, with 1 inch thick polyester batting sewn inside. Comforters create a flatter, more uniform look on the bed compared to a duvet.

What are "super" sizes?

In addition to standard King and Queen, Eastern Accents offers both Super King and Super Queen sizes. These special sizes are extra-long on the sides, designed to accommodate a pillowtop mattress. The extra length can also be useful if you plan on tucking the duvet or coverlet under the mattress, or if you are trying to hide a box spring.

For reference, a standard Queen size will drop down about 12 inches on the side of a Queen mattress, while the Super Queen will drop down 16 inches. A standard King size will drop 14 inches, and a Super King will drop 18 inches. We recommend measuring the height of your mattress before you order.

Super sizes are available in coverlets, duvet covers, and duvet inserts.
