When shopping for bedding, you may find yourself with a difficult decision: Duvet vs. Comforter. Like many Eastern Accents collections, our newest ensemble, Elise, features both a Duvet Cover and Comforter as a decorative top bedding layer. Both pieces come in the same sizes and look extremely similar, so it can be hard to tell the difference. We are here to help simplify things! Essentially, a duvet is made of two parts—a cover and an insert—while a comforter is a single, sewn-together piece. Let’s dive into all the differences between these two high quality bedspreads, and find out which style is right for you.
What exactly is a duvet?
A duvet is a large, primary bed covering made up of two parts: a cover and an insert. A duvet cover is a removable decorative covering, similar to a large pillowcase. It is designed to protect your duvet insert from dust and stains, with a zipper or button opening to take the insert in and out. The cover is also the beautiful part of a duvet, typically made from decorative fabric and often adorned with trims or cording. Eastern Accents duvet covers come in a wide range of colors and styles, making it easy to change the look and feel of your bedding.
Keep in mind: our duvet covers are sold on their own, so you’ll need to purchase an insert if you don’t already have one.
What is a duvet insert?
A duvet insert is essentially a large comforter, filled with down feathers or faux-down microfiber, that lives inside of a duvet cover. This is what makes a duvet warm and fluffy. Duvet inserts are available in a variety of fillings and warmth levels. Without an insert, a duvet cover is an empty shell.
Both Eastern Accents duvet inserts and duvet covers come with ties at the corners so they can be secured together. This prevents the insert from shifting or bunching inside of the duvet cover.
What inserts are recommended for my duvet cover?
Each type of down insert comes in three different warmth levels; Light, Medium, and Deluxe. We recommend our deluxe warmth level for colder climates, along with duvet covers made of heavier fabrics like flannel. Our medium weight inserts are suitable for all-seasons, while light weight is ideal for warmer climates or those who prefer a blanket-like feeling.
Loure faux-down inserts are hypoallergenic, and the perfect low-maintenance option for guest rooms and rental properties. For an in-depth look at each of our insert options, please refer to our Down Buyer's Guide.
What is the difference between a duvet vs. comforter?
While a duvet is made up of two parts—the insert and the cover—a comforter is all one piece. Eastern Accents comforters are made with the same decorative outer fabric and embellishments as our duvet covers, but with 1-inch thick polyester batting sewn inside. Because of this, comforters create a flatter and more uniform look on the bed compared to a duvet. Many people find a comforter to be more convenient than a duvet, as it does not need to be taken apart for cleaning.
Features of our Comforters include:
Two layers of decorative fabric with polyester batting secured inside to prevent shifting
Lightweight poly batting with a 1" loft
Super Queen and Super King sizes, recommended for pillow-top mattresses
Two finishing options: Button-Tufted or Hand-Tacked
Dry-clean only
What are the different types of comforters?
Eastern Accents' decorative comforters come in two different finishing options: button-tufted or hand-tacked.
Hand-tacked comforters are finished with barely noticeable stitches on the face and reverse. These stitches hold the outer decorative fabrics together with the inside batting, keeping our comforters neat and uniform.
Button-tufted comforters are tufted with fabric buttons on the face and reverse, covering the hand-tacking underneath. The fabric buttons are made with the same fabric as the comforters, so the overall style remains as similar as possible.
