With fall in full force and winter around the corner, it’s time to brace for the cold. Luckily, at Eastern Accents, we love all things soft and warm. Now is the time to explore layers and find the right bedding to suit your winter needs. Between coverlets, blankets, and throws, there are so many choices for how to bundle up this season. Here, we're breaking down the difference between these warm essentials, to help you find bedding that is right for you.
What are Coverlets?
Warm, durable, and crafted with the highest quality fabrics, our coverlets and blankets are bedding layers you can build with. Though they share similar qualities, these two classics aren’t exactly the same.
Coverlets are perfect for layering, depending on your climate or the time of year. These soft additions can be used in place of a duvet/comforter in warmer climates, or along with one in colder climates. Unlike our blankets, coverlets are often quilted or matelasse. Meaning “to quilt” or “to pad” in French, matelasse is a woven fabric with a textured or quilted effect. Browse through our matelasse options, like Halprin, to see this unique textile in action.
Not all matelasses features a standard quilt-like pattern, though. Delray, for example, is a textured matelasse that boasts a unique coral design; Sweetness on the other hand, features a playful polka-dot pattern.
Beyond padded texture, some of our coverlets, like Nova, are actually quilted with ¼ “ thick microfiber batting inside. This adds a little extra warmth and loft. However, some, such as Bowen Slate, do not feature batting. This gives the look of a quilt without the extra insulation. Their quilted nature and quality construction make them an incredibly versatile, layer-friendly option.
These soft staples follow the same sizing scale we use for our standard bedding. This accommodates a variety of bedding styles, ranging from twin to cal king—including super queen and super king. Our super queen/king sizes are slightly larger than standard queen/king sizes, in both width and length. They are made to accommodate thicker mattresses, pillow-top mattresses, or personal preferences.
The majority of our coverlets are washable, making them perfect for kids’ bedrooms, vacation and rental homes, or everyday use. Browse all washable coverlet options here.
Blankets
Our blankets on the other hand, come in twin, queen, and king sizes. They correspond with standard bed sizes, rather than accounting for drop length and style preferences. They aren’t necessarily made to fit the same way a sheet or duvet would, but rather as an added layer. For colder climates, blankets are perfect to tuck in between bedding, under a duvet and on top of a flat sheet.
See our line of flannel blankets, made with quality cotton that retains warmth. They’re more than just functional, though. Our blankets are great for top of bed too, folded over or the star of the show.
Throws
Throws are the perfect accent – whether draped on the bed, a bench, or a sofa. These cozy statements are a blend of fashion and function, allowing for endless accessorizing opportunities. Plus, they’re an extra layer to bundle up in.
Throws, an ideal statement piece, aren’t sized the same way as coverlets, or even blankets. Each of our throws comes in one size, roughly 53x80. This sizing makes for an incredibly versatile addition that can be effortlessly styled in any room, with any bed set.
Browse through our wide range of throws to find your favorite, from faux furs like Midori to intricately woven designs like our Ferndale Oat Throw. Now discover our Dolce Throws: in a wide range of classic neutrals, these luxurious throws feature the highest quality 100% wool.
While these three staples function differently, they’re all great options for layering this winter. Browse our full range of blankets, coverlets, and throws that can be mixed and matched across collections.
