Based in Carmel, Indiana, designer Jamie Gauker has mastered a style that ranges from traditional to contemporary. Her goal is to always keep it fresh and functional. With an expertise for Indiana's transitional midwestern aesthetic, but a wide ranging skill-set that branches beyond it, Jamie blends her design perspective with her clients' vision. As a business owner, she tackles every facet of the industry, with a special knack for understanding - and communicating - with people. We sat down with Jamie to take a peek into her design approach as the founder of J. Gauker Interiors.
How would you describe your signature style?
My signature style falls between traditional and contemporary - really transitional, a blend of many styles. I call it sophisticated casual. My goal is to give each client comfort and function in a way that feels elevated, yet still easy to live in.
Do you have a favorite color or palette to work with?
Paint has a profound effect on emotion - it resonates with each person differently. My favorite is Iron Ore from Sherwin-Williams. It's a soft black that grounds a space beautifully, and it finds its way into most of my projects. But I have an equal love of color. While grey has been a primary color over that last few years, I've always layered in a pop of color - greens, blues, golds etc. The point is to evoke emotion in the client, not in me. Once I identify the color that truly resonates with them, we can build an entire space around it.
How does Carmel, Indiana influence your design style?
In many ways, less is more here. Carmel is an upscale area with beautiful new construction alongside a strong wave of homeowners renovating older homes. Across both, the goal is the same: keep things current without chasing trends. People want their homes to feel timeless, not dated in five years. That's why it's on us to know the difference between a passing trend and what has real longevity.
What are your favorite types of projects to work on?
My favorite projects are the ones where the client can express how they want the space to feel and function, then trust our process to create the perfect space for them. Sometimes we're starting from scratch; sometimes we're building around a special piece they want to keep. When they let go and let us manage the project, it goes smoothly - and the outcomes are beautiful.
