Home decor history
Nailheads have been in use as home decor for hundreds of years, though their purpose was not always decorative. In the 17th century, French furniture makers used brass studs to attach fabric to chair or settee frames, effectively hiding the seams where the upholstery was tacked.
As designs evolved, nail trim remained closely associated with traditional styles, popular in classic pieces such as Chesterfield sofas and wingback chairs. Today, decorative studs can be found in a wide range of design styles, from glam to modern to retro, demonstrating the enduring appeal of these classic pops of shine.

Eastern Accents manufactures bedding and upholstery in-house in Chicago, allowing for the utmost attention to detail. Many other workrooms have switched to using a strip of nailheads, but those products have a large margin of error and the studs are often placed crookedly or unevenly. Those issues are easily avoided when applied by hand. It may take longer, but that is a sacrifice we are willing to make to preserve quality.
So, how do ours get attached? First, our designers carefully choose each fabric to make sure it can hold a studded design: fine linens and loose weaves can’t support the weight. Complicated patterns may require stencils as a guide for placement. Once our craftspeople determine where each one will go, nailheads are then pierced through the fabric and held in place by star-lock washers and a bit of glue. And voila, a studded design has come to life!

Located in our Chicago factory, our upholstery team crafts each piece of furniture by hand to ensure the highest quality. This allows our customers to customize pieces to their exact liking, and many choose to add shining studs to upholstered beds and headboards. A wide variety of sizes, fabrics, wood stains, and nailhead options are available through our easy-to-use online rendering program.
You’ll often see Eastern Accent’s ottomans adorned with decorative nails along the bottom. Our Tilda Ottoman is upholstered in a real leather cow hide, embossed and printed with metallic design. The pattern changes direction on each side for a modern geometric effect. The textured leather is complemented by brushed nickel nailheads, studded in a triangle design on the bottom corners. Not only is this design visually appealing, but it also protects the base from damage from shoes, pets, and more. Beautiful and built to last!
