You’ve probably never given much thought to drapery lining. After all, it is designed not to be noticed! Quality curtain-making is not all in the decorative drapery fabrics, it's the little details that take drapes from average to extraordinary. The experts here at Eastern Accents know everything there is to know about how to make drapery curtains—including the unseen materials. From blacking out light during the day to insulating your room during the winter, there are many hidden benefits a good lining can provide. Here, we are going over every type of curtain lining we offer, and helping you determine which is best for your home.
What is drapery lining?
Drapery lining is a secondary, non-decorative layer of fabric attached to the back of a curtain panel. Lining drapes provides many benefits including protecting the front/decorative fabric from the sun, filtering out light, improved insulation, creating a fuller and more attractive drape, and providing a finished look to the back of draperies.
Do I need drapery lining?
You do not necessarily need lining, many sheer panels are unlined by design! If you want your decorative panels to block out light and provide privacy, we recommend one of our many linings or interlinings.
Types of Lining
Standard
Eastern Accents’ default drapery lining filters light, provides extra fullness, and helps extend the life of your curtains. Standard lining comes in two color options, Eris White and Eris Ivory. Available in both single and double widths, this standard lining is compatible with most panel sizes, and is stable in humidity to accommodate any climate. As the best-selling curtain lining in Europe, this multi-functional textile is a tried-and-true classic!
Specialty
Eastern Accents offers plenty of specialty lining customizations. Blackout drapery fabric used to block 99% or more of natural light, creating near-total darkness. Available in both white and ivory color ways, our heavy-duty blackout lining prevents sunlight from coming through your curtains, while also insulating your windows and helping to deaden sound. Certified flame-resistant, this blackout drapery material is the ideal choice for hotels and other commercial projects.
Solaris Silver, Eastern Accents’ reflective lining material, not only blocks out sunlight, but actually reflects it. Engineered for energy efficiency, this reflective lining will help to cut your cooling costs in hot summer months and insulate your home through the winter.
Our napped curtain linings, Vanth White and Vanth Ivory are fuzzy on one side and smooth on the other— perfectly combining standard and interlining. Ideal for use with thicker fabrics like boucle or velvet drapery, this unique lining option keeps a panel from becoming too hefty.
Interlining
Interlining is an additional layer of fabric sewn between decorative curtain panel fabric and standard lining. Our bespoke interlining options are available to customize any of Eastern Accents brand draperies. Not only does interlining provide extra light filtration to window treatments, it also aids in insulation and sound-deadening. Our 100% cotton Indus interlining is ideal for adding extra fullness, while Dorado’s ‘heavy bump’ textile is engineered to protect delicate silk-faced draperies. Each lining textile is available for use in custom projects or for purchase by-the-yard.

FAQs
Are any linings flame resistant?
Yes, Eastern Accents’ standard blackout linings, Caelum White and Caelum Ivory, are certified flame-resistant. This is the ideal choice for hotels and other commercial projects.
What is “napped”?
A “napped” fabric is fuzzy or textured. We offer the fabrics Vanth Ivory and Vanth White, which are fuzzy on one side and smooth on the other, providing benefits of both lining and interlining all in one. This is ideal for curtain panels crafted from thicker decorative fabrics, such as velvet. The napped combination lining offers the extra light filtration and insulation of interlining with the smooth finish of standard lining, all without making a panel too heavy.
What is “heavy bump”?
“Heavy bump” is a fabric term meaning extra-thick. Our heavy bump drapery interlining, Dorado White and Dorado Ivory, is specially engineered to protect delicate silk-faced draperies from the sun. Not only does this thick, heavyweight interlining provide extra light filtration to window treatments, it also aids in insulation and sound-deadening.
